John 16:21
A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
I had tried EVERYTHING, and I wanted him out! I ate a whole pineapple, I jumped on a trampoline, I squatted, I ran, I did jumping jacks, I had my membranes stripped and I even had sex! Finally 4 days past my due date I decided to drink Castor oil :\
I woke up at 2:30 a.m and it was not a pleasant experience, and no contractions... When I couldn't sleep anymore because of contractions every five minutes, I was super excited! Even more excited when I discovered bloody show. So we took it easy and got everything ready and decided to go see my midwife to find out if it was time. We dropped off Kenna, even with an overnight bag, and were convinced he would be here by that night.
When I was checked, I was only a 3 and about 90% effaced and slightly bummed, but because I was still having contractions every 5 minutes, my midwife thought it would be best to labor at her home until I was in active labor. My contractions were getting stronger and my back labor was getting worse, and I was nervous about my original plan to go unmedicated. After about 6 hours my contractions started coming every 10 minutes, and I really got discouraged. In an attempt to relax and keep labor going, Tony and I went for a walk, which took us down steep paths, up hill, and up lots of stairs... and it helped for a while. But at about 7p.m contractions basically stopped altogether, so after many tears, we headed home to get some rest, because we were sure we would be going to the hospital soon.
Contractions were waking my up all night, but were at least 20 minutes apart, so I did my best to rest. We decided to have a family day with Kenna, and went to the park, the mall, and ran around and relaxed. After a pretty uneventful contraction day we invited friends over for movies. I figured if things were this slow, we decided to relax and enjoy one more evening without a newborn.
Not even 10 minutes after my friends came over my contractions came back with some force! Although I was in pain, I told them that we should just watch a movie, because we shouldn't go to the hospital too early. They started noticing that my contractions were close, and they were getting panicked, but I told them it was fine. Jake started timing my contractions, and I realized that because of their worry, every time I had a contraction they got silent and starred at me. This was frustrating because I was not ready to go, but they we were. I finally called my midwife, and she said we could just come by, so she could check me, so that they would calm down. I had only slightly progressed, so of course I was even more frustrated. So we headed to my in-laws to relax a bit more, before heading to the hospital.
We finally checked into the hospital at around 11:45p.m on Saturday night(4/30). I wanted to get into the tub so bad I felt like screaming, however, after I got into my room I wasn't even seen by a nurse for over an hour. When she came in she started freaking out about my blood pressure... uh duh I am in labor, which causes me pain, plus I have some large rocks in my kidney, obviously my blood pressure is being affected! She of course wanted to do blood tests for preclampsia, which I already knew I didn't have. After another hour an angel of a nurse came in and was all about getting me in the tub, and making sure I was eating. She was such a blessing, because I was so determined to have a VBAC, and she treated my labor as if I had never had a c-section.
When you are a VBAC you have to be monitored the entire time, which was making the tub thing an issue, considering the wireless monitors were being sensitive. FINALLY after what seemed like forever, they got them working and began filling up the tub. I labored in the bath for what I believe was about 2 hours, and it helped a lot, but the back labor was becoming harder to deal with :( I found a sitting position on the bed which really helped me and by morning my Dr. was ready to break my water. Having been awake for over 24 hours, I was horrified about him doing this, since it generally kicks labor up a notch. My Dr. said I should get the epidural, so that I could get some sleep, and I was not wanting that either. My midwife suggested morphine, and although my Dr. didn't seem to care for that plan, he did it! And hallelujah, Tony and I enjoyed about a 3 hour nap!
At this point I was about 5cm dilated and I had rested, the Dr. was now ready to break my waters, and I was less resistant and ready knowing that the baby would be here today!
I alternated from all fours, to the birthing ball, to sitting in bed for a few hours and started to get really impatient and was losing my focus and motivation. I was beginning to understand why people just decide to get c-sections, but I didn't want that again. But at about 6:30p.m I said "Give me drugs!" (I later found out that I was also passing kidney stones from my kidney to my bladder, which they said was impossible!). I was finally dilated to a 7 when they came in to do my epidural, and with contractions so close I didn't know if it was worth it. At this point they hadn't been monitoring my contractions, and they put in an internal monitor. They were shocked to see the strength of my contractions, because of how slow my progress had been. The epidural was awful because it was either too strong to where my upper body was starting to tingle or not working at all, making it pointless! I was an 8, and pretty convinced I would be pushing soon, but Liam for whatever reason was stationed at a -3, and had been 6 hours :( So the Dr. finally decided that it was best to do the c-section, and by this time I was to tired to oppose.
In the operation room, I felt like I waited FOREVER, but after being very uncomfortable, he was born at 1:50a.m! Weighing in at 8 pounds and 6 ounces, 19.5 inches long! Dr. said he was going straight into my back, and wasn't going to come out no matter how long we tried! And that is my VERY detailed birth story :)
